How does Art Therapy “work”?

I often get asked how Art Therapy "works" and the beauty of it is that it adapts to meet you wherever you're at each session. Sometimes the people I work with use the art materials to express a feeling or experience that they had.

However other times, sessions create space to simply tune into the body and to play with the materials until we find a movement or a mark that feels supportive.

At the moment I'm painting this watery series called Surrender, which involves painting lots of repetitive waves. I can feel my body and my mind being soothed by this motion and the colours as I go.

What art materials do you reach for to sooth your frazzled soul?
